Supporting Literacy Skills in the Context of the MCAS

​Successful test takers have an advantage. Connecting comprehension level and word level skills to test taking through a Readers' Workshop model will help our students continue to build transferrable strategies, even across the genre of test taking. The following tools will help you embed MCAS instruction and intervention during Readers' Workshop. The key to successful test-taking support is to embed it throughout the year in the genre units of study on which you would normally focus. 
In line with the philosophy behind our RW instruction, MCAS improvement won't come from practice and assessment alone. Explicit modeling of test-taking strategies, small-group support, and intervention through conferring will "teach" children how to master response to test prompts.
